Things to do in Sutherland this weekend and into next week

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1

Exhibition

Strathnaver Museum is launching a new exhibition entitled ‘Betrayal and Loss’ by Australian artist and metalworker Barry Smith from 7pm. All welcome. Part of the Highlands and Islands Climate Festival.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 2

Tractor Run

Memorial tractor run 'TrA8tors EUAnite' in Assynt. The tractors will set out from Lochinver harbour at 10am and return at 4pm for a raffle and prize-giving. A fundraiser for Macmillan Highland.

Clothes Swish

Clothes swish at Rogart Mart 11am-2pm. £5 entry with 10 free tokens, each redeemable against an item of clothing. Refreshments and raffle.

Car Boot Sale

Tesco Tain car boot sale 9am-1pm. £5 per space; no need to book. All car boot sellers can set up from 7.30am.

Duck Race

Annual duck race at Helmsdale. The ducks will be launched from Telford bridge at 3pm with a grand prize of £100 and prizes for the first 10 winning ducks. Barbecue from 2pm with bottle stall, face painting and live music, hot dogs and ice creams. Buy your ducks at Timespan’s front desk.

Pipe Band

Sutherland Caledonian Pipeband street parade in Golspie 7pm-8.30pm. An evening full of traditional pipeband music. The band will begin their march outside the Stag’s Head Hotel, Main Street, at 7pm. In memory of Hamish Campbell. All money collected will go to to Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland.

Live Music

Sutherland Sessions hosts a night of Gaelic song at Lairg Community Centre from 7.30pm. Taking centre stage will be Irish brother and sister Seamus and Caoimhe Ui Fhiatharta, who will be supported by Peigi and Donaidh Barker and Gaelic choir Binneas. The event is part of the Blas festival. Tickets available via the link at www.blas.scot

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 3

Storytelling

Join traditional storyteller Jenny Neesham, from Bonar Bridge, at the Torroy bothy at Ledmore and Migdale Wood 10am to 4pm for Witchbird - in character storytelling from two millennia of Highland tradition.

Wellbeing

Wellbeing in the Woods at Gearrchoille Woods, Ardgay, 10.30am-11.30am. A relaxed and gentle one-hour session encompassing nature-based mindfulness and forest bathing practices. Over 16s only. A drop in session with no booking required. Free of charge - fully funded by Think Health Think Nature.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5

Fungi Foray

Fungi Foray at Balblair Woods, Golspie, 10am-12pm. The event is a workshop on how to identify mushrooms to tell which are safe and which may not be. Countryside ranger event. Donations welcome. Book via eventbrite.

Guided Walk

Countryside ranger led guided coastal walk from Clachtoll beach to Clachtoll broch 11am-3pm. Meet at Clachtoll beach car park. Bring a packed lunch. £10; book via eventbrite.

Community Lunch

Community lunch at the Kyle Centre, Tongue, 12pm-2pm.
