A team of east Sutherland cricketers will assemble for their first competitive foray under the auspices of the North of Scotland Cricket Association this weekend.

Dornoch Cricket Club took steps to reform back in 2022 after a period of more than 25 years of inactivity.

The previous incarnation of the club withdrew from the North of Scotland Reserve League in 1996.

Last year, they played a match in Dornoch, welcoming NoSCA league side Nairn County CC for a friendly meeting at the Meadows.

Now, members are preparing to play in a competitive match as a guest club in the North of Scotland FA Development Cup.

Over the next three months, they will compete against fellow West division contenders, Skye & Lochalsh, Fort Augustus and Ross County 2.

Their first test comes this Sunday, April 14, against Skye & Lochalsh in what will be their first encounter in the West division.

Due to damage to Skye’s pitch, the fixture will be played at Nairn’s home ground, The Links, with a start time of 1pm.

Club captain Christopher Schleter said: “It’s really exciting to be leading the side for our first competitive run out in years.

“Obviously, in a development cup it is hard to predict what the quality of the opposition is going to be, but I reckon we have enough to cause most opponents problems.

“I can’t fault the commitment of the players so far and, behind the scenes, the committee have been hard at work trying to make sure that funding applications are going in to provide the most stable environment possible.”

Dornoch CC last won the Development Cup back in 1994.

Further games are already scheduled in the competition, pitting Dornoch away to Fort Augustus 2 at the Abbey Ground on May 5, and a match at home to Ross County 2 on June 23.

Training is held on Tuesdays at the Meadows from 6.30pm. All are welcome.
