FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8

Book Festival

Scotland’s Indie Book Festival kicks off today at Othin House, Helmsdale, and runs until Sunday, September 10.

It is the second year of the festival, which was first held in 2022 in Thurso, and it is thought to be the first of its kind to take place in Helmsdale.

Organiser Glyn Salisbury has described it as a “three-day celebration of storytelling”, and around 16 authors are expected to attend.

The programme comprises talks, workshops, readings and book launches as well as competitions, book salestables and a raffle. Visit: www.scotlandsindiebookfestival.co.uk

Film Weekend

A weekend of two films, food and chat at Halladale Hall. Film showing on Friday is ‘Just Eat It’ about the frightening scale of food waste and what can be done to change the situation. On Saturday Willem Dafoe narrates ‘River’, telling how rivers have shaped landscapes. 7pm for food and 7.30pm for food. Chat before and after. A part of the Highland Climate Hub events.

Film Club

Kyle of Sutherland Cinema Club at Bonar Bridge Community Hall from 7.30pm. All welcome.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

Soup and Sweet

Soup and Sweet at Rogart Hall 11am-2pm. Raffle.

Community Market

Ardgay Community Market at Ardgay Public Hall 10am-12pm. More information and booking: info@thehirsel.com The theme of the market is ‘wonderful wool’ and there will be spinning, carding and weaving demonstrations.

Youth Fest

Youth Fest at Timespan Museum and Arts Centre, Helmsdale tomorrow. Nature activities with the RSPB from 10am-2pm and the reopening of Timespan youth library from 3pm. Free event for all ages. Pipe Band

Dornoch Pipe Band's last parade of the 2023 summer season at the town square from 8pm.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10

Wellbeing

Wellbeing in the Woods at Gearrchoille Woods, Ardgay, 10.30am-11.30am. A relaxed and gentle one-hour session of nature-based mindfulness and forest bathing practices. Over 16s; no booking required - a drop-in session. Fully funded by Think Health Think Nature.

Live Music

An evening of amazing entertainment from Capercaillie and Session A9 fiddler Charlie McKerron and friends at Lochinver Village Hall from 7.30pm on Sunday. Also there is the opportunity for a mixed-instrument workshop before the gig. Book via ticketsource or email: YellowDoorPresents@gmail.com

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

Fungi Guided Walk

Join the countryside ranger for a guided 3km walk to find mushrooms in Culag Woods, Lochinver, 11am-2pm. Meet at Woodside car park, past Lochinver Primary School on the road to Inverkirkaig. Over 18s only. Booking via eventbrite.

Pond Dipping

Join the countryside ranger for pond dipping at Gearrchoille Wood 1pm-2.20pm. A family event suitable for ages six and up. Book via eventbrite.

Town Walk

A Historylinks Museum guided 1.5 hour walk around Dornoch from 2pm. Stopping at various places to hear about the places and people that have shaped the town over hundreds of years. Part of Scottish Archaeology Month. Contact: curator@historylinks.org.uk

Eco-poetry writing workshop with Cáit O’Neill McCullagh at Timespan Museum and Arts Centre, Helmsdale, 10am-12pm.
