Plans are under way to mark the centenary later this year of three war memorials in Sutherland

Events will take place to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the monuments at Ardgay (Kincardine), Lairg and Rogart.

An event will be held on September 30 to mark the centenary of Lairg war memorial.

David Hannah, of the Creich and Kincardine branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, said: "After World War I most communities raised memorials to their fallen – family, friends and neighbours.

"The long lists of names on the memorials highlight the gaps left in many small communities.

"This decade sees these memorials reaching their centenary, although tragically it seems that the lessons of war, especially the human costs for the ordinary person in the street have not been learnt."

An open invitation has gone out to all, and especially people with family connections to those named on the memorials, to attend the ceremonies.

The first commemoration will take place at Ardgay (Kincardine) on August 15.

"There will be a short service of remembrance at the war memorial followed by refreshments and a reminiscence session in Ardgay Public Hall," said Mr Hannah.

"It is hoped that people will bring along items that have a family connection to those wars our community participated in, and a story that might interest others.

"The memorial was built by public subscription and was a community project."

The Rogart ceremony will be on September 24, and the Lairg one on September 30.
