A NEW youth club opened its doors for the first time in an East Sutherland village earlier this month.

Brora Youth Club held its first session at Brora Community Centre on Wednesday, January 10, welcoming around 24 young people of secondary school age.

Lead youth worker Megan Penny said: “It was wonderful to see such an amazing turnout on our first night. The young people were a delight to work with and everyone had a great time!”

The club’s programme of activities includes games and music and free food and drinks.

Brora Development Trust is behind the initiative and has spent months paving the way for the opening, including the formation of the Brora Youth Partnership, a group of passionate local volunteers keen to make sure the needs of young people in Brora are met.

The Partnership’s role is to guide the development trust on the youth initiative.

The youth initiative has received funding from the Westminster Foundation (£10,000) and SSE Renewables’ Gordonbush Community Fund (£4,672).

Support has also come from Highland Council’s ward discretionary fund and East Sutherland Badminton Club.

Demi Fraser was one of the young people who attended the first session.

She said: “It was really good! We played on the football table most of the night and loved the free food and drinks.”

Demi’s mum, Charlene, said: “It is nice to have a safe place for the kids to go at night. It keeps them busy and out of trouble and allows them to socialise. We are so happy to have this on our doorstep.”

Brora Youth Club meets on Wednesdays 7pm-8.30pm and Fridays 6pm-7.30pm.

Group outings and activities outside of these sessions will take place throughout the year.
