Dornoch eco-friendly distillery scheme reaches planning stage

A PLAN for a £7 million, new, eco-friendly whisky distillery and visitor centre at Dornoch is progressing.

Dornoch Distillery Company Ltd has lodged a planning application with Highland Council for the ambitious development on a 7.5 acre site at Dornoch South.

The project was unveiled last September by brothers Philip and Simon Thompson, who founded the distillery company in 2017. Designs were showcased to local residents in a four-day community consultation exercise, and the brothers also made a presentation to Dornoch Area Community Council.

The council's minutes state that the initiative was met with "unanimous enthusiasm" from members.

Plans include a two-storey new distillery, warehouses and a low-lying solar farm and wetland system.

An existing old gas works building, dating back to the 1880s, would be transformed into a visitor centre with a tasting bar and shop.

In a representation to planners, Royal Dornoch Golf club wrote: "All at the golf club hope that this development goes ahead."
