Public consultation prompts application for asset transfer of Melvich toilet block
A positive response to a residents' survey has prompted Melvich Community SCIO to apply the asset transfer of the village’s public toilet block on the back of a positive response to a public consultation.
The consultation, which was shared with public toilet users and Melvich residents, revealed that the majority of respondents (81.9 per cent) felt that the block is not fit for purpose for persons of all abilities. 56.2 per cent of respondents lived in the Melvich area.
Support was also shown (85.9 per cent) for the group to begin a community asset transfer from the Highland Council.
Further detailed comments provided by respondents were included in the report, specifically the issue of whether or not the group will charge for the use of toilet facilities going forward.
It was also specified that the organisation should take into account comments related to the design of the toilet facilities as part of the design of the new community hub facility.
A statement on the group's Facebook page read: “Based on the community support that we have been shown, Melvich Community SCIO have now formally submitted a community asset transfer application to the Highland Council for the Melvich public toilets and its associated land footprint.
“The process can take 6 to 12 months to complete and we have funding in place to cover the anticipated legal fees, thanks to a grant award from SSE Strathy North Windfarm community benefit fund.”
