Clyne Heritage Society (CHS) has appointed Brora resident Isla Campbell as its new community heritage officer.

The appointment follows closely on from that of new community engagement officer Aileen Ogilvie, as the society moves towards establishing its own community heritage centre and museum at Old Clyne School.

Both posts have been funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the postholders will work closely together to foster links between the society, the Brora community and the wider parish of Clyne.

Isla is currently an allied health professional, assisting the occupational therapist and physiotherapist in the rehabilitation department at the Cambusavie Unit in Golspie. She served on the Brora Carnival Week committee for 10 years and is no stranger to organising events and activities.

Society chairman Dr Nick Lindsay said: “Isla was the unanimous choice of the board from a very strong national field for this new and exciting role. The CHS board believe that she will bring a wealth of experience in community work and enthusiasm to the position.

"In her role, Isla will work with Aileen to engage with local schools, community groups and stakeholders to deliver the society's activity plan ahead of its move to its new centre at Old Clyne School.

"Isla will help to develop innovative learning experiences and events that will showcase the unique heritage of the Brora area.

"From guided tours to interactive workshops and events, she will work to create opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with their heritage in a meaningful way."

Dr Lindsay continued: "Isla will be based at the current Brora Heritage Centre at Fascally and will also be responsible for managing the centre's staff and volunteers, as well as using her customer service skills in a front of house role."

He added “We are on the cusp of a very exciting time for the society, our community and our visitors. The Board of the Clyne Heritage Society is confident that Isla and Aileen will form a first-class team and will deliver our activity plan, generating further interest in the society, the current Brora Heritage Centre and the new Old Clyne School facility.”

Isla, who will take up her post in April, said: "I am incredibly excited about Clyne Heritage Society’s new heritage centre project.

"I’ve been watching it develop over the years and am delighted to see it get under way, and to be part of the team is amazing.

"Having lived my whole life in Brora, I have lots of local knowledge, both current and historical and I am looking forward to learning more and contributing all my current skills to the development of the new centre."

The society is currently advertising for a heritage officer to work four days a week for the coming season, which opens on Good Friday, March 29th.

Dr Lindsay signed a £3.5 million contract with Thurso-based O'Brien Construction at the start of the month to redevelop Old Clyne School into a community heritage centre and museum.

Work is set to start on April 1 and is expected to last 52 weeks, with an opening date set for May 2025.
