YOUNG, novice sailors from throughout the north enjoyed a regatta recently at Findhorn, where they raced in a fun environment.

There was something for everyone with three short races for the dinghies, powerboat training for the siblings not racing, and a large spectator’s boat following the fleet for all the parents. Among those participating were a group from Lairg.

Coaching and instruction was available from the early start of 9am right up to 2pm, with the racing starting at 3pm. There was hot soup and sandwiches for everyone at lunchtime which was gratefully received.

The Findhorn tide was a new experience for many of the young sailors, some of whom had never sailed on the sea before.

North East Scotland Sailing and Highland Moray Sailing came together to organise the event, their first junior championships. They are two of the ten Sailing Development Groups working with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Scotland, with each of the groups hosting their own junior championships over the same weekend (6-7 October).

Youngsters came from Plockton, Stonehaven, Lairg, Peterhead and many places in between. This type of fun event is crucial to encourage novices out onto the water.
