This year’s Guy Cup was played out at Farr High School Park on Saturday afternoon with all the usual suspects stepping up to the touch-line.

Teams from Melvich, Kinlochbervie, Durness, Bettyhill and Tongue, together with Farr United, still including one or two veterans of the original competitors, thrashed it out in two leagues of three for entry to the semi-finals.

Both the far west teams, Durness and KLB, were knocked out at this stage, leaving Farr United to tackle Melvich and Bettyhill to tackle Tongue for the honour of appearing in the final.

The oldsters held Melvich to a two-all draw before triumphing in a penalty shoot-out while the young Bettyhill team was dumped 2-0 by their rivals from Tongue.

The final began promisingly for Farr United, who opened the scoring.

But in the end, despite their most strenuous efforts, the veterans went down by 4-1 as the young legs proved better than the old, with a score-line which would have been even more ignominious had Ross Mackay not excelled himself in goal.

The Cup remains a key feature of the North Coast calendar and a fitting memorial to the three football stalwarts, no longer with us, whom it commemorates – the original Guy Mackay of Newlands, Rickard Wood of Crask and Marty Mackay of Durness.

The silverware was presented by the late Guy’s sister-in-law, Dawn Mackay of Inverness, with the Guy Cup, the Player of the Day Cup and the Best Player in the Old Team Cup being collected by Tongue Captain, Mark Keith, Farr United player Blair Duncan, and Farr United goalie, Ross Mackay respectively.

In the Penalty Kicks Competition, Lewis Mackay of Melvich won the junior section while Ben Gordon won in the seniors.
