Conditions could not have been better for the last meeting of the season of Caithness and Sutherland Seniors’ Golf Society at Golspie last week.

The course was in superb order with weather to match but, none the less, visiting players found points hard to come by with home players dominating two of the handicap categories.

The exception was the lower handicap category that was won by Brora’s Ken Lorimer with 35 points beating Reay’s Alistair Gunn by a point. Countback was needed to sort out third place with Ronnie Gray (Thurso) getting the nod over Martin Mackay (Durness) after both scored 33 points. Geoff Robinson (Bonar/Ardgay) was next best on 32 points, one ahead of Don Bremner (Golspie) and Bob Robertson (Thurso).

Golspie claimed all of the prizes in the middle handicap category with Ross Urquhart beating Robbie Dunn on countback to secure first place with 37 points. Countback was again needed to determine third place with Colin Ritchie beating Thurso’s Jim Telfer, both scoring 36 points. John Chambers (Royal Dornoch) had 33 points for fourth place. Nigel Baird (Bonar/Ardgay) (29) and Farquhar MacGregoor (Wick) (28) were next best in the category.

Arthur Cook (Golspie) was a decisive winner of the higher handicap category with 37 points, six points clear of Bill McIntosh (Lybster) who beat Jock McLeod (Bonar/Ardgay) on countback for second place. Wick’s Gerry O’Brien was fourth with 29 points, one ahead of Bill Watson (Thurso).

None of the main contenders improved their scores at Golspie so the individual trophy winner was Jock McLeod with a best four-round total of 148 points. Nigel Baird and Bernard Ledwith (Brora) shared the runners-up trophy with 144 points.

At the AGM, Nigel Baird was elected captain of the society and Gerry O’Brien vice captain.
