ROYAL Dornoch exile Jimmy Gunn, who is striving to get his tour card back for the Web.com Tour in America, did not get the start he was hoping for at the Tour Qualifying School Stage 2 four-round eliminator at Bear Creek Golf Club, Murrieta, California..

Jimmy shot a first round three-over-par 75 to be lying joint 38th in a field of 75 players and followed this up with another 75.

Only the leading 18 players and ties after 72 holes proceeded to the final qualifying school in Florida next month.

But the ex Dornoch amateur gave himself a fighting chance of reaching next month’s final stage Tour Qualifying School in Florida by shooting a five-under-par 67 in round three.

Gunn had birdies at the first, sixth, 11th, 12th and 13th in bogey-free halves of 34 and 33. His 54-hole total of 217 left him at one over par and up in 18th place, the top 18 going forward.

Then in round four came the disappointment of a nightmare triple-bogey 7 at the last hole to cost him a place in the final Qualifying School field in Florida.

After his excellent third round, the Royal Dornoch exile looked like sailing through from the Stage 2 eliminator when he birdied the 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th after bogeying the sixth hole on his outward card.

Before his chance sadly slipped from his grasp with a 7 at the par four 18th to finish with a 72 for joint 20th place on 289 and miss out by one stroke on the qualifying total of 288 from which 19 players went forward.

Last season Gunn qualified for a card on the second tier of American professional golf but with poor early results dropped off the circuit and returned to a Satellite Tour in the Arizona area where he is based.
