His well-worked gross 74 was just one shot above the competition CSS which escalated to 73 in the very windy conditions.

The outward holes running parallel to the beach was where a score had to be built, but following four good par figures at the beginning of his round, Tomisson’s triple bogey seven at the fifth hole from a visit to the Dalchalm Burn had him struggling against the elements.

A birdie four on the par five eighth hole from the Nairn three handicapper recovered his card to an outward three over par 38.

Turning for home into the tough wind, the winner’s bogey five at the 10th hole lost no ground and, following up with pars on the 11th and 12th, he struck for home with a birdie two on the short 13th to set up the best inward count of the day, a 36.

He led the scratch returns by three shots from Philip Bannerman (Strathpeffer Spa) 77, (37/40) and then Barney Mackie (Carrbridge) 78. Dods Krzyzanowski (Strahpeffer Spa) also carded a 78 but lost third place to Mackie, but the Strathpeffer lefty enjoyed the leading scratch score in his age group (55 to 64).

Local member Robin Wilson was amongst several who returned 79 but with a stirring par finish of 4-3, his inward card led the scratch returns in his age group (65 to 70).

In the final section for over-71s, who found the conditions extremely testing, the best gross score came from Chris MacLeod (Moray) with an 86. The handicap prize in this section was won with a nett 80 by Jim Hosie (Invergordon).
