SHE’S the Tain torpedo and now officially ranked the fastest in Scotland.

Elise Cosens, from Golspie, is just 11, but already she’s showing great promise in the water.

The youngster achieved her record feat in Thurso when Tain Association Club swimmers travelled to compete in a mini-meet.

Elise scythed through the water in the 50 metre freestyle event in under 30 seconds.

And her time not only puts her on a pedestal as the quickest 11-year-old female swimmer in Scotland, but also the fourth fastest in Britain for the event.

While Elise was the star of the day at the meet, her fellow Tain competitors shared in the glory.

Between them the youngsters came away with 11 gold medals, nine silver and five bronze, with the relay team taking bronze in the freestyle and fourth in the mixed medley.

Three competitors were presented with best girl swimmer awards for their age category – Claire Wood (12), Elise Cosens (11) and Eleanor Ross (10).

Elise’s mum Hazel, who coaches at the Tain club, said she was “very proud and pleased” with her daughter’s achievement.

She said primary school pupil Elise had started competitive swimming aged nine and now had ambitions to compete in the Commonwealth Games and ultimately the Olympics.

“She’s always been keen and she trains well,” Mrs Cosens said.

This weekend Elise will be travelling to Bathgate for a two-day meet when she will be competing against youngsters her own age.

Her mum said: “She thrives on competition, it gives her a buzz.”
