Sutherland defeat league champions to get campaign off to winning start

Sutherland stunned champions Buckie with a 1-0 win on the opening day of the Highlands and Islands League on Sunday.

Bethany Sutherland scored the only goal of the game with 20 minutes remaining to give the visitors victory in Portgordon.

It was a stunning win for Sutherland against a Buckie team who have won the league and the League Cup for the past two seasons.

The Highlands and Islands League campaign started on Sunday with all eight teams in action.

Sutherland have maximum points after their first game but are in fourth place on goal difference.

Caithness are top of the league on goal difference after they thrashed Ross and Cromarty 7-2 in Thurso.

Ross County Development began their campaign in rampant style as they thrashed Orkney 6-1 in Alness as they are in second place.

Clachnacuddin are in third place as they started their campaign with a 4-1 victory over Nairn St Ninian.
