Royal Dornoch Golf Club is named fifth best in the world by Golf World / Today's Golfer

ROYAL Dornoch Golf Club has been named the fifth best golf course in the world according to a top 100 list compiled by Golf World/Today’s Golfer.

The Sutherland course has risen four places to be placed number five in the world rankings.

St Andrews was named as the top golf course in the world.

Royal County Down in Northern Ireland was ranked second with Royal Melbourne West in Australia and Turnberry (Ailsa) in Ayrshire making up the top four.

Muirfield, Cape Wickham, Pacific Dunes, Royal Portrush and Kingston Heath made up the top 10 in the world.

Other Highland courses featuring in the list include Castle Stuart which is ranked 33rd and Skibo Castle in 41st place.

Scotland boasts 19 courses on the list, which focuses on clubs which have tee times – sometimes only a limited number – available to the public.

Other Scottish golf courses to make the list include North Berwick (18), Kingsbarn (20), Ardfin (25), Carnoustie (28), Cruden Bay (30), Trump Aberdeen (35), Royal Troon (39), Gleneagles King’s (48), Prestwick (53), Royal Aberdeen (56), Machrihanish (61), The Machrie (75) and Western Gailes (99).

It is a big accolade for Royal Dornoch Golf Club to be named among the top five in the world. The course is currently preparing to host the Scottish Amateur Championship which will be taking place on Tuesday, August 1 and will be a 36 hole competition.

The course will also be hosting Vagliano and Junior Vagliano Trophies in June.

The competition is a women’s amateur international match between Great Britain and Ireland and Europe. Last Summer, Royal Dornoch hosted The R&A Women’s and Men’s Senior Amateur Championships.
