ABOUT 30 competitors from the North Highlands braved the first snows of winter to compete in the Men’s County Singles Indoor Bowls Competition at Lairg Community Centre last weekend.

The numbers were lower than usual due to the weather, but the quality of play was impressive.

Many of the games were too close to call right up to the final leg and, with big names such as Keith Legg and Alan Mackay being knocked out in the first round on their home turf, there was all to play for.

Special mention must be made of John Chatten, also of Lairg, who was in top form, making it to the quarter-finals in less than a year of playing bowls.

But in the end there can only be one winner and the final played between Mike Irwin of Golspie and Ian Macleod of Lochinver showed Ian to be the runaway singles winner of 2012 with a score of 12-6 in 10 ends.

Players are now praying for better weather as they look forward to the Open Singles competition on 5th January.
