Finn Crockett will be taking a Commonwealth Games medal back to Strathpeffer after crossing the line third in the road race in Birmingham.

Crockett had been part of the leading group the whole race, and managed to keep pace with the leaders right until the very end.

It was a sprint finish with a handful of riders bidding for a podium place after Welshman Geraint Thomas faded away with half a kilometre to go.

New Zealand's Aaron Gate finished first with Daryl Impey from South Africa taking silver, but it needed a photo finish to decide third – and Crockett just edged out Northern Irishman Matthew Teggart ahead of Englishman Fred Wright.

Less than a second separated the top five, but Crockett is among the group able to celebrate getting on to the podium after his efforts over the 189km race.
