Marty passed away on 16th April 2010, a day after his 43 birthday, after a short but acute illness of renal cancer.

His many friends are determined that his life should be remembered and celebrated and this annual event is to recall and observe the good times shared with Marty.

Marty was well known in the area for all the diverse activities he participated in and people of all ages and from all over the north took part in the events on Saturday, 21 April.

Fifty-five cyclists started from Lairg and cycled the 67 miles to Durness via Tongue, while 40 walkers started from Kinlochbervie fire station and walked 24 miles to Durness, with a further 25 joining en route at Rhiconich, walking 19 miles, or from the Guilin, walking 11 miles.

Some ran the route and some hill walked over the Southern Parph from Sandwood Bay, and two ladies climbed Ben Hope.

At various stages, refreshments were made available.

Everyone arrived safely at Durness Village Hall where a barbecue was available and a dance with Slange Ava was held.

Many of the participants were sponsored, with several donations being received and details of the money raised will be made available at a later date.

Marty’s family want to ensure that his life is celebrated and that other families put in this situation have the support that was shown when Marty was diagnosed and received his palliative care. They also wish to help research into causes and treatments of the disease.

To this end the family are in the process of establishing a memorial charitable trust to ensure donations and funds raised make a significant difference to families in the Highlands.

They are very grateful to all friends who have courageously supported and remained involved during difficult and emotional times and organising this event.
