Rowers from throughout Scotland competed at Loch Insh.

The 2014 Scottish St Ayles skiff rowing season came to an end last weekend at Loch Insh Watersports, Aviemore, with 22 of the 36 coastal rowing clubs in Scotland represented at a national competition.

The country was divided into four regions: North, Fife and Angus, South East and South West.

Each 400m sprint race was organised by combining members from each region to make composite teams.

The North region was formed from the Helmsdale, Portsoy, Avoch, Gairloch, Ullapool and Achiltibuie clubs.

Strong winds led to difficult rowing conditions on the loch but the competition was still strong.

Fife and Angus eventually won in a close fought battle, beating the North into second place. The South East came third with the South West fourth.

Garry Smith, Bunillidh Rowing Club treasurer, said: “We were rowing for our region rather than our clubs so it made for a great atmosphere.

“Hopefully next year Golspie will be joining Helmsdale as part of the Scottish Coastal Rowing family. They have started to build their boat this winter.

“Helmsdale looks forward to taking them on next year.”
