The new Lairg Table Tennis Club got off to a flying start last week with a healthy turnout of ten children and the same number of adults for the later session.

Club chairperson Sam Barlow said: "We are delighted to get off to such a good start. Players of all abilities turned up to have a game and improve their skills as well as enjoy a social occasion.

"People came from all over the Lairg area and even as far away as Scourie to take part. We were pleased that Hans Mol came from Golspie Table Tennis Club to help with the kids’ coaching and oversee our first night. Many thanks also to the Golspie club for lending us the tables until our own tables arrive."

Lairg TTC successfully applied for funding from the Scottish Communities Foundation who awarded a grant of £1500 from the ABO Wind Farm fund, which will cover the cost of three good quality folding tables and associated playing equipment.

The club are seeking match funding to meet the cost of a fourth table and to cover the cost of hiring the hall every Thursday evening for the next six months.

Money raised from subscriptions will go towards additional costs associated with organising coaching and tournaments to be held later in the season.

Sam explained: "Next week’s session will also be a free introduction for players after which we will be seeking subscription fees. Annual subscriptions are a very reasonable £20 for the 26 week season, with a 50 per cent discount for an additional family member or a full family membership for £40.

"This would cover kids and adults from the same family.

"Being a member will allow anyone to turn up on a Thursday evening and play without additional cost and also take part in any coaching sessions organised by the club.

"Non members are welcome to come along and can make a donation of £1.50 for the evening.

"With four tables there is plenty of capacity for everyone to play at all abilities, and we welcome anyone to come a long and have a go."

Lairg Table Tennis Club will run every Thursday evening from October 25th until April 25th not including December 27th, at the Lairg Community Centre Hall.

The children’s (aged 10 to 16) session is from 6.30pm until 7.30pm. The adult session runs from 7.30pm until 9.30pm.
