Ten teams competed for this year’s Jack Mowat Open Pairs bowls in Lybster on Sunday.

As well as teams from the host club there were teams from Golspie, Thurso and Rosebank (Wick).

After a round robin of three games each, the two teams which qualified for the final were the Lybster team of Marshall Bowman (lead) and Stan Fraser (skip) along with last year’s winners from Golspie Robin Colvin (lead) and George Mowat (skip).

The Lybster duo had won all three of their games whilst the Golspie pair had five points from two wins and a draw, but by virtue of a greater shot difference of +15 eased their way past Lybster’s Sandy Robertson and David Mackay on the same points but only +4 shot difference.

The final looked to be a step too far for the Lybster team as they struggled to get into things. Played over 12 ends the score at the ninth end was 12-3 in favour of Golspie.

However, the home team were lying five with the chance to register a significant boost in its fortunes.

George Mowat managed to ease any anxiety that might have arisen over the last few ends by drawing the shot with his last bowl.

That effectively killed off the final and the Golspie duo ran out worthy winners by 14 shots to 6 to take the trophy back over the Ord.
