East Sutherland Athletics Club had plenty to celebrate following their North District Cross Country Championship at Forres.

This event featured all the top runners from Caithness, Sutherland, Stornoway and North Uist and included strong teams from Lochaber, Inverness and Moray.

The outstanding performance of the day came from young Constance Nankivell who, despite being just eleven years of age, won the Under 13 girls’ race.

Excellent support from Helen Gordon (7th), Sine Soszka (10th) and Rosie Nankivell (12th) meant that the first team gold of the day went to ESAC.

Fraser Roach ran superbly to take the individual silver medal in the Under 13 boys’ race and Kier Beaton showed real determination to claim a fine seventh place.

The Under 15 boys’ race was packed with quality runners but with Ross Gollan (3rd), Alasdair Coupar (4th), Lewis Holmes (6th) and Liam Barnsby (7th) once again the team gold went to the outstanding ESAC boys’ team.

In the equivalent girls’ event, it was an excellent team silver for East Sutherland thanks to Hanna Cleghorn (7th), Catriona Gordon (8th), Eilidh MacRae (10th) Rebekah Bryan (15th) and Aspen Priddy (17th).

The race for Under 11 boys was listed as a Fun Run and Adam Allan timed his finish perfectly to take first place.

Shane Turney had his best run of the season to claim third and, with Taran Squire (5th) and Sam Bryan (13th), their team total could not be beaten.

John Davies, the East Sutherland coach, was delighted with the overall performance at Forres.

He said: “A lot of these young athletes were competing at this level for the first time and they showed great composure.

“Our numbers continue to grow and there is a tremendous team spirit throughout the club – we are lucky to have so many parents who support us throughout the year.”
