HAVING been postponed from the previous week because of stormy weather, the last meeting of the season for members of the Caithness and Sutherland Seniors’ Golf Society was played out in fine conditions at Golspie on Monday.

David Maclean (Royal Dornoch) has had a good season in Society fixtures and rounded it off in fine style with a win in the lower handicap category on Monday.

After being out in 17 points, the winner added 18 more on the way in to hold off the challenge of Thurso players Ronald Mackay and Pat Valentine who finished with 34 and 32 points respectively for second and third places.

Four players, Ronnie Gray (Thurso), Ian Hamilton (Brora), Donnie Jack (Golspie) and Ian Fraser (Royal Dornoch), finished a point further back.

The day’s best score belonged to Golspie stalwart John Davies who had a very good front nine of 21 points and added 15 more on the back nine to win the middle handicap category by two points from club mate Robert G Mackay. Brora’s Byron Kerr claimed third place on 32 points with Duncan Clark and Arnold Bevan, both from the host club, a point behind.

Count back was needed to sort out the prize winners in the high handicap category. John Beaney (Brora), David Lyall (Thurso) and Gerald Klein (Durness) finished in that order after scoring 33 points each. Nigel Baird (Bonar/Ardgay) was next best on 31 points, one better than Thurso’s Jim Johnston.

Golspie retained the team quaich with a best three round total of 101 points with Thurso on 99 points and Brora on 97.

The individual winner with a best four round total of 148 points was David Maclean. Runner up with 145 points was Gordon Kilgour from Bonar/Ardgay.

At the AGM following the golf, Thurso’s Sandy Reid was voted in as captain and Nigel Baird as vice captain.
