THE Golspie Golf Club championship reached the matchplay stage on Saturday with four of the golfers involved being greenkeepers at the club.

In the first semi-final, five times club champion Alexander MacDonald eased his way past Tim Featherstone with a fine birdie at the 18th to go two up.

In the other semi-final, Craig Mackay booked his place in the final with a splendid 5 and 4 victory over Darren Hexley.

The final produced some outstanding golf with both players recording a series of birdies to reach the turn all square. A Mackay birdie at the 10th was cancelled out by two MacDonald birdies at 12 and 13 only for Mackay to level things with a birdie of his own at the 14th.

Further wins at the 15th and 17th gave Craig Mackay an outstanding 2 and 1 victory and his first club championship.

In the handicap section, Jack Harrison took 19 holes to defeat Stuart Gillies and set up an intriguing final against another young golfer, Colin Sutherland.

As with the previous final, the match was decided on the 17th when Jack Harrison took the hole to record a 3 and 1 victory.
