THE Musselburgh partnership of Alan McHoul and Jane Herd were winners of the Brora Mixed Foursomes competition last weekend while Brora’s Lynda Mackay and Golspie’s Hazel Proctor became the two women most sought after to form winning partnerships.

McHoul and Herd, both well equiped with single figure handicaps of seven, were the only partnership to return a scratch card of under 80 against the course par of 69.

They had an outward nine holes of 39 strokes then, after a couple of bogey fives on the first two inward holes, ran off seven successive par figures for an inward 36 and 75 to win by five shots from former scratch winners, Brora Ladies Captain Marlene Bokas and John Sutherland (42&38) for a card of 80.

Lynda Mackay has formed half of the winning partnership in the R M Street Shield in three of the last four years, in 2009 with Mike MacKintosh, 12 months ago with club champion James MacBeath before last weekend reuniting with MacKintosh to post a nett 69, off 13 handicap and beating the 2010 Golspie winning partnership of James Yuill and Sheila Roberstson into second place, the Golspie partnership shedding a tear or so when they ran up double figures at Brora’s third hole, the "Canal".

Golspie women seem to hold all the charm when 2010 winners of the A L Mackay Memorial Trophy, Hazel Proctor and John Innes (Castle Heather) linked up once again to triumph in the higher handicap section with a par bursting nett 64, off 17 handicap. But then it is a leap year and a ladies prerogative, Golspie’s Lesley Cranna moving into a third place with Tyneside’s John Turner.

Results:

Scratch – Brora Salver – 75 A McHoul (Mortonhall)/J Herd (Mussellburgh). 80 J D Sutherland/M Bokas (Brora). 82 T & A Bartlett (RDGC), A Powell (Deeside)/D Powell (Brora).
