LOCH Fleet went into the Christmas break of the Sutherland Province curling championship race at the top of the table on Monday night.
The meeting with last season’s champions, Rogart, against the emerging Loch Fleet rink bubbled over into a Christmas romp for Loch Fleet’s Skip, Keith Stewart, as he and Emma Deeth, and Helen and Scott Lyon recorded one of the biggest league scores on record, 17-5.
Locheye’s first skip, Tony Watson, and the North Highland Curling Trust’s two Skips, Hugh Mackay and Richard Mackenzie, remained within two points of Loch Fleet after winning results. Watson left it late with a final end single to get past his Locheye second Skip, Alan Mackenzie 7-6.
Hugh Mackay cruised past Stuart Gardiner (Dornoch) 9-3, while Richard MacKenzie had a tougher nut to crack in Brora’s Neil Murray.
MacKenzie’s points to maintain his title challenge were not in the bag until a steal in end four put him 5-1 in front before eventually running out a 6-3 winner.
Two Skips, Alan Munro (Ross-Sutherland Young Farmers) and Coreen Macrae (Alness), went into round five pointless when they met up, but MacRae’s first win of the season, 9-2 took her away from bottom place.
Results: Round 5 – N Murray (Rogart) 5, K Stewart (Loch Fleet) 17. H Mackay (NHCT 1) 9, S Gardiner (Dornoch) 3. A Munro (RSYF) 2, C MacRae (Alness) 9. T Watson (Locheye 1) 7 A. Mackenzie (Locheye 2) 6. N Murray (Brora) 3, R MacKenzie (NHCT 2) 6.
