Mary McCowan triumphed in the new trophy contest at Durness.

All sections of the club were represented – gents, ladies, seniors and juniors. At the close of play, having finished in runner-up spot, Tattie handed over the handsome silverware to junior member Mary McCowan.

Final scores were: 1 M. McCowan (26) 63; 2 A. Corbett (17) 64; 3 M. Mackay (10) 64; 4 J. Morrison (15) 64.

Mary has hit a purple patch recently, having also won the Scottish Brewers Stableford with 44 points, ahead of defending champion Gerald Klein who finished on 40.

In the final of the matchplay event, she will play either John Mackenzie or Davy Ross, having already disposed of Martin Mackay, Donald Morrison and Uisdean Morrison.

Favourable weather, a course in excellent condition and less rough than in the height of summer have all helped contribute to the run of low scoring of recent weeks.

The Walk-on Open, played on 10th June, attracted 39 entries and threw up blistering scores.

Dougie Thorburn of Reay equalled the course record of 68 to win the scratch section from defending champion and current record holder David Mackenzie who this time HAD a 72.

Another Reay member, Lee Parnell, was one of several players to return a score of 73; he claimed third place scratch.

Gary Duncan, a Brora member with strong links to Durness, turned his gross 73 into nett 58 to run away with the handicap section.

Local member Uisdean Morrison broke 80 for only the second time in his short career and that was good enough for runner-up spot on nett 64.

This was equalled by Janet Cordiner who has now claimed the women’s prize three years in a row, just ahead of Anne Mackenzie who finished on 66.

Nearest the pin at the treacherous 18th was won by Karen Mackay with a distance of just 4ft 2in.
