TAIN Golf Club will be hoping to win the Northern Counties Cup for the first time when the 103rd running of competition takes place over their course next Thursday.

Thurso based Dougie Thorburn makes his second appearance in a Tain line-up but this year as the North District Champion.

When they last hosted the competition in 2008, both their teams exited on the first day. Siblings Billy and Munro Ferries provide a good foundation, joining Thorburn and fourth player Alan Everett face event debutants Wick in Thursday’s second round draw.

The Tain second team of Paul Austin, Frank Mackle, Chris Ilett and Gary Thom have the unenviable task of taking on holders Newmachar in their first game.

The latter go with the same team that have won the competition in three of the last four years following their first success in 1997.

But Royal Dornoch still hold the record of 21 cup wins. Looking to bring the old cup back to Dornoch for the first time since 1988 are David MacKintosh, David Pearson, Bryan Urquhart and Neil Munro.

They have a bye into the second round where they await the winners of the Moray v Duff House Royal first round tie.

Brora who had a lean spell since the 80s but reached the final only to be beaten by Newmachar at Lossiemouth in 2011, are led again by James MacBeath, with Liam MacDonald-MacLeod, Calum Stewart and Euan Polson completing the line up. They have drawn Turriff in their second round tie.
