GOLSPIE greenkeeper Craig J Mackay came from behind to win the Golspie 36-hole Open last Saturday by one shot.

Billy K Ferries, the Sinclair Cup first round leader, with a gross 68, failed to hold on to his lead in the second round. He was overtaken by Mackay, who returned rounds of 73 and 70 for a 143 total. Jorg Paulus was a shot behind and last year's winner Alexander MacDonald was two shots adrift.

The Clydesdale Cup Class 1 handicap was won by Inverness member Alan Coutts with rounds of net 67 and 73 for a total of 140 after a card play off with local member Steve Doogan who also had 140. The count back went to the last nine on the second round.

Other Golspie local, Jimmy Oliver sneaked third place on a card play off beating Alan Greenhalgh, from Walton Heath, with a better second round on 141. The Argo Cup Class 2 handicap was won by yet another Golspie local, Tim Featherstone by two clear shots with scores of 69 and 73, net total 142. He won from regular American visitor, Glenn Owens on 144 followed closely by Stuart Richardson, Golspie on 145.

Results: Scratch – C J Mackay 73 + 70 = 143; A MacDonald 73 + 72 = 145.

Class 1 handicap – A Coutts (8) 67 + 73 = 140; S Doogan (5) 67 + 73 = 140 J Oliver (9) 70 + 71 = 141; A Greenhalgh (7) 69 + 72 = 141.
