GOLSPIE Sutherland lost ground in the North Caledonian League title race when they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by rivals Thurso at Sir George’s Park last Saturday.

The visitors found themselves a goal behind in the 11th minute when Graham MacNab latched on to a slack pass back to score.

Golspie tried hard to get back on level terms and Shane Sutherland forced a fine save from Halkirk goalkeeper Graeme Williamson.

John MacKay came close with a free kick shortly afterwards which flashed over the crossbar.

Another set piece from MacKay produced more heroics from Williamson, who managed to claw the effort behind for a corner.

There was little in the way of goalmouth opportunities in the second period as Thurso hung on to their slender lead.

Elsewhere, Alness United cruised to a 6-1 win over Halkirk United at Dalmore Park, while Clachnacuddin came from behind to pip Muir of Ord Rovers 2-1 at Grant Street Park.

ON Saturday, Golspie host Alness United in the quarter finals of the SWL Cup at King George V Park. It is the second time the teams have met in three weeks, Golspie having won the league encounter 4-1.

Fixtures – Saturday, November 17 – SWL Cup quarter-final – 1.30pm – Invergordon v Thurso; Golspie Sutherland v Alness United; Clachnacuddin v Muir of Ord Rovers.
