Twelve teams of pairs representing Lybster, Rosebank and Golspie turned out for the annual Jack Mowat Pairs held in memory of the man whose vision and endeavours lead to the formation of Lybster Bowling Club 25 years ago.

After the round robin stages of three matches over ten ends, the two teams through to the final were the Golspie pair of George Mowat (skip) and Robin Colvin and the Lybster combination of Stan Fraser (skip) and John Grant.

The final was one of the best, if not the best, in recent times witnessed by those present. Play swung back and forth so that by the sixth end – the halfway stage – Lybster were two shots up leading 6-4.

By the eighth end it was 8-7 to Golspie and at the tenth end Golspie were in the driving seat leading 10-8. Lybster picked up 2 on the penultimate end and at peels it was all to play for on the last end. No one present could foresee the final outcome to this end.

Lybster were lying 2 shots to the good with one bowl just in front of the jack and one just behind it. The cup was almost in their grasp.

Golspie had the last shot. Skip George Mowat stepped up the mark and played his only real option in superb fashion by rattling the front bowl onto the jack and the jack then hammered onto the bowl behind and flew out side ways to where Lybster held a bowl a bit wide of the head.

The jack continued sideways and just out of the rink to burn the end. An extra end was now needed to settle matters.

On the extra end – the thirteenth - it was unlucky Lybster and well done Golspie as they picked up the single shot required with a bowl to spare.

Another Lybster trophy heads over the Ord to Golspie carrying the names of Robin Calvin and George Mowat, who assured all present he was not related in any way to the man whose trophy bore his surname.
