Golspie High School senior girls’ handball team became Scottish Schools Champions last week when they competed at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre in Motherwell.
The girls travelled the 10-hour round trip to compete against teams from in and around the central belt for this prestigious title.
The girls played six games throughout the day, winning two, drawing three and losing one, before qualifying for the final against Linlithgow Academy.
The final was a tense game with each team seeing plenty of attacking action and some determined defending. Golspie High School were first to score, putting pressure on the opposition. But with goals being scored at both ends it was soon a nail biter of a finish.
With the score at 3-3, and two minutes to go, Jessie Howell scored her first and vital goal, giving Golspie a 4-3 win and the title Scottish School Handball Champions.
Top scorer in the contest for Golspie, with 12 goals, was Bethany Sutherland, followed by Kirsty McNamara with six.
Nicole Murray, Megan Sutherland and Amy Greaves worked tirelessly to ensure their team achieved success.
Ailsa Murray, the team’s goalkeeper, made many brave saves throughout the tournament and certainly contributed to the team’s eventual win.
This is a tremendous achievement for the senior girls and one that the school is very proud of.
Handball is being taught during curriculum time and is growing in popularity at Golspie High School.
In March a team from Kelvinside Academy, Glasgow, is visiting the school and will take part in coaching and tournament games.
