GOLSPIE Sutherland boosted their title credentials with a 3-2 victory against North Caledonian League rivals St Duthus at King George V Park.

It took a late winner from substitute Eoghann Davie, his eighth of the season, to seal the points for Golspie in a closely fought affair.

Golspie manager Andrew Banks felt his side were the better team over the piece, although he conceded the visitors created the better chances throughout.

“We were probably lucky to go in at half time at 2-2, but we controlled the game better in the second half, “ said Banks. “We had more possession although they caught us on the counter attack a couple of times.

“It was an important win, and we probably deserved it in the end.”

The teams meet again on Saturday in the Football Times Cup final at Brora's Dudgeon Park, and Banks is hoping for the same outcome, but warned: “We need to be on our game to win the cup. The league is our priority but we are definitely up for the final.”

Ally MacLeod gave Golspie the lead in the second minute when he knocked in a Liam Bremner lay-off following a long throw from Blair Duncan.

A Ben Bruce double, his second from the penalty spot, saw Saints take a 2-1 lead.

But back came Golspie and Bremner headed home a Craig Ross corner to square matters just before the break.

Golspie edged it in the second half and super sub Davie hit the winner in the 72nd minute when he cut inside, beat two players and lashed a 20 yard left foot shot into the net.

In the only other match played, Halkirk United defeated Inverness Athletic 3-2 at Morrison Park.

The matches between Bunillidh Thistle and Bonar Bridge and Invergordon and Orkney were postponed due to waterlogged pitches.

Fixtures: Saturday, January 18 – Football Times Cup Final – Golspie Sutherland v St Duthus (at Dudgeon Park, Brora, 2.30pm). League – Bonar Bridge v Inverness Athletic (1pm); Bunillidh Thistle v Orkney (12.45pm); Halkirk United v Thurso (1pm).
