The four weeks of premier competitive golf in East Sutherland begins at Royal Dornoch tomorrow with the 36 hole Sinclair Cup challenge, followed by Brora and Golspie events before returning to Royal Dornoch for the Carnegie Shield.

It has been Royal Dornoch’s senior members who have been starring on the links over the past few weeks. After moving north from the Glasgow area in 2011, David Pearson made an early impression on the Sutherland scene when the following year he became Sutherland’s County Champion. Now playing senior golf, two weeks ago he won the Robbie Grant Medal in the Dornoch senior open with the score of 72.

Holding both the medals in the club was Paul York, who won the Duncan Murray Quaich and Silver Medal with a nett score of 68, two below the course par.

From the Dornoch women’s section, Alison Bartlett recently brought home from Elgin two senior Scottish titles, the stroke-play and match-play, and then only last Sunday, at Spey Bay, she teamed up with her fellow Northern Counties Association team member, Claire Riddle, to win the Northern Counties Commonwealth Spoon’s competition.

Before Dornoch based Northern Counties President, Liz Coghill, stepped forward to present the winning partnership with their trophy and ticket to the Scottish finals at Ladybank in Fife in September, she teamed up with her fellow Royal Dornoch member, Denise McBride, to receive the third handicap prize.

The Association are fortunate to have such good golfers as Bartlett, holding the office of secretary, and Riddell the Association’s junior convenor. Their gross card totalled 72 and their nett 69 won the County Foursomes Cup played over the Spey Bay course last Sunday, and the ticket to the SLGA’s Commonwealth Spoons grand final to be played over Fife’s quality Ladybank golf course.

It was announced this week that Alison Bartlett and Tain sisters Anne Ryan and Mary Smith have been included in the Scottish Vets team to play England North, Midlands and South at the Veteran Ladies Golf Association Jamboree at Wallasey Golf Club on the Wirral peninsula from August 5 to 7. The trio have also been selected to represent Scotland in the European Senior women’s team championship at Gut Altentann GC, Austria from September 2 to 6.
