BRORA Bowling Club held the final of the Chambers Pairs last Friday night and were honoured to have four members of the Chambers family there to present the trophy.

The closely fought final between John Floydd and Rosemary Irwin and Angus Mackenzie and Brian Manton was 7-6 after 10 ends, then two 3s by Floydd and Irwin put them in the driving seat, a lead which they held to the end to lift the trophy.

President Tommy Wink thanked everyone who had come along to watch the final, and then introduced Anne Quinn, Kathy Robson, Gill Anderton, granddaughters, and Lesley Quinn, great-granddaughter of the late George M. Chambers.

The family were in Brora for a few days’ holiday and were asked along to the club to present the Chambers Trophy to the winners.

Before the presentation, Anne Quinn read an extract from her grandfather’s obituary, which appeared in the Northern Times on 25th November 1926.

Part of the obituary read: “It will be, however, the work he did for the Brora Bowling and Tennis Club that will last as a fitting memorial.

“Not only did Mr Chambers act as joint secretary for the recent bazaar, but he drew up the plans and supervised the construction of the bowling green and tennis courts.

“The bowling green and tennis courts bear ample testimony to the genius of Mr Chambers.”

Two trophies were donated to the club in 1930 – one for bowls and one for tennis.

The original bowling trophy went missing in 1978, but has since been found and both trophies are now on display in the clubhouse.

A new Chambers trophy has been played for since 1979 and that was presented to the winners, John Floydd and Rosemary Irwin, by Anne Quinn.
