Dean wins premier Tain trophy

FORMER Golspie junior and now a Brora Golf Club member, Dean O’Brien led from start to finish to win for the first time Tain’s premier 36-hole open tournament trophy, the Abdul Ghani Cup, in the Balblair Distillery sponsored event at the start of Tain Golf Week last Saturday.

After sharing the first round lead with Inverness starlet Cameron Nelson, O’Brien added a level par 70 to his first round three under par 67, eventually winning by three shots from local club champion Munro Ferries. Nelson fell away to third place after a second round 74.

Royal Dornoch’s Scottish Youth Champion, Lyle McAlpine, recorded a hole in one at the 16th hole in round one and finished in fifth place after cards of 72 and 74.

David Joel (Inverness) headed the nett returns to win the Rutherford Trophy with a nett aggregate of 135, off 4 from nett cards of 71 and 64.
