ROSS Currie on Sunday became one of very few in the history of the August men’s open to break par 70 and win the scratch title at Durness Golf Club.

This feat in the past has been achieved by Tom Webster, Troon St. Medans; Bryan Ronald, Thurso, and John McCook, Grantown.

Ross’s 69 started with a bogey but was cancelled out with a birdie on the par 5 which saw him turn in level par.

A birdie on the 10th, another on the par 5 and a wee slip on his nemisis 17th hole got him home in 34.

He was chased all the way by last year’s winner Gary Urquhart who trailled by two shots at the turn but blazed home in 33 to finish just one off the pace.

The overall handicap prize was lifted by new greenkeeper Alistair Morrison with a fine nett 66 playing off 15. Connor Munro had another good round to finish on 67 beating Richard Mackay on a countback.

Belgian visitor Tom Vanlerberghe was delighted to win the Class 3 handicap after a very steady round saw him card nett 70.

Entry numbers were nearly 100 per cent up on last year, the weather was almost perfect, and the course was in tip top condition, so that, added to all the excellent performances, made for a very successful event.
