TEAMS representing Sutherland and Caithness will play a memorial shinty match tomorrow (Saturday) at Viewfirth Park in Thurso.

The match is in memory of local minister and shinty stalwart Rev Kenny "Nostie" Macleod who died in April this year at the age of 52.

It is the first time the shinty teams from the two neighbouring counties have faced each other since the 2010 Mod Cup when Caithness emerged victorious.

Well known in the north, Kenny was minister at Thurso Free Church. He also took the midweek meetings at Helmsdale. He was a lifelong enthusiast of the game of shinty and in his earlier years played for Kinlochshiel, Lochcarron and Aberdeen University shinty clubs.

He established Thurso Junior Shinty Club in 2006, with the help of his wife Marianne, and two years later he co-founded Naver Athletic, the first senior shinty team in the Far North since the Dounreay team of the 1960s.

His greatest success came at the 2010 Mod Cup when he captained the Caithness team to victory at Bignold Park in Wick.

The Sutherland team will consist of past and present players from the two shinty teams in the county – Kinlochbervie Camanachd and Farr High School.

Entrance to the match is free, but donations will be gratefully received for The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre.
