MORE than 90 golfers braved the force 9 south-west winds last week to take part in Golspie Golf Club’s inaugural qualifier competition for their Celebrity Charity Golf Day in 2014.

Teams from as far afield as Stornoway, Alford, Nairn, and Castle Stuart, as well as Sutherland, vied for the £1000 entry prize.

After bacon rolls and a nip of the finest Clynelish whisky, the teams walked out onto the beautifully presented golf course. After four hours they returned to the clubhouse in sunshine – some of them again in dire need of another nip of the local nectar!

Local Highland Councillor Deirdre Mackay presented the team prizes.

The greatest cheer of the night was for the Royal Dornoch/Golspie combo of Walter Bremner, Jamie Oliver and Brian Urquhart, who won the main prize of entry into the 2014 Celebrity Golf Day competition. In second place was the team "Daisy Cutters" (also RD/Golspie) – A Macdonald, C Mackay and E Macdonald. Third was "Life’s a Pitch" (R Dornoch) – H & E Macrae, N Hampton, and in fourth place was the "Girnie Gits" (R Dornoch) – A Gunn, M Lynch, I Henderson.

In his winner’s speech, Walter Bremner thanked the organisers and wished them well for their future events.

Additional prizewinners were: Nearest pin 6th – W Mackay; nearest pin 10th – C Madgewick; longest drive 14th (Lady) – P Ashe; longest drive 14th (Gent) – A Coghill; straightest drive 18th – C Stewart.

The magnificent amount of £2268 was raised, which will combine with the income from the next two events (the 2013 qualifier and the Celebrity Golf Day itself) to be shared between Maggie’s Inverness and The Silver Rock Foundation, which will help youngsters in the Golspie area.

Images of the day were captured by photographer David Walker, and Golspie printer Craig Mowat had these mounted for players to purchase, with proceeds also going to the charities.
