Champions crowned as 'Orion' take plaudits on Golspie High School sports day
New champions were crowned and memories were made for another year at Golspie High School as pupils competed in their annual school sports day on June 2.
Wonderful weather made for perfect sporting conditions as all pupils took part in at least two events on the day.
There were new S1 records set with Kate Lynn Taylor throwing a distance of 14.50m in javelin, while Rori Edwinson-Fritz achieved a new record in the 300m, running it in 51.63 seconds.
Callum Marshall-Williams set a new standard for S2 boys javelin with a distance of 28.10m.
Four records were broken at S3 level. Abby Holiday set a new girls record with a javelin toss of 15.20m, while David White also threw a new benchmark of 28.7m. In the boys discus event, Caleb Williams-Shale set a new record of 21.55m, and in the 400m, David Murray ran in a record 1 minute 1.62 seconds.
In the senior girls events, Chelsi Mowat broke the record for 300m with a time of 53.82 seconds, while there was another javelin record set, this time by Lorna Macrae, who threw 16.80m.
After competition across five events, Golspie High School also crowned their boys and girls sports champions. For the boys, Charlie Dunbar collected the David Whyte Trophy, while Lorna Macrae was awarded the Dorothy Forbes Trophy.
Senior boys champion Charlie said: "I won all the track events that I had signed up for and the triple jump, and was 0.08 seconds from getting a school record in the senior boys 100m. There was some pretty tough competition at senior level in the jumping events which made it more exciting.
"I always enjoy sports day but enjoyed this one more because we have not had sports day in the previous two years. This was my first time competing as a senior at sport day and I felt I performed very well and enjoyed my day."
Senior girls champion Lorna said: "I was really keen to win the Dorothy Forbes Shield as it was my last sports day before I leave school next spring.
"On the day I won the triple jump, high jump, javelin and discus for the senior girls. I also broke the record for the senior girls javelin throwing a distance of 16.80m.
"Overall it was a good day because everyone was in good spirits as it was the first sports day in 3 years and to top it off the weather was great."
PE teacher Trisha MacRae reserved praise for the school pupils as a whole.
"All pupils were a credit to themselves and the school as they demonstrated excellent determination to achieve whilst supporting and encouraging each other throughout.
"We would like to say well done to all pupils but special congratulations to the pupils who received a medal and those pupils who broke the school records.
"Thank you also to Walter Mackay and Alan Cameron for having the field in such excellent condition, to the wonderful pipers, to our refreshments team, our photographers, senior helpers and to the canteen for adjusting our lunchtimes.
"A special thank you to all staff – this day simply would not run without your help and support so thank you."
