weekend’s Golspie Classic also incorporated the Millicent Bowl trophy, which had to be canceled due lack of entries at the beginning of July.

This is a restricted trophy that can only be won by a member of a Sutherland Club, and on Sunday, this was Ross Powell who is a member at Brora.

First round scratch leader Ian Powell led the field with a one under par gross 69, being two shots clear from the chasing pack of Alexander MacDonald (Golspie’s head greenkeeper), Kristian Sinclair and Darren Hexley.

But in round two he slipped slightly to a one over par 71 which was just enough to let MacDonald through with a two under par 68 to win by one shot.

Kevin Matheson, Royal Dornoch member, took third place with 147 while Hexley and Sinclair dropped back into the field with 149 and 148 respectively.

Sinclair took the third place voucher for Division 1 handicap which eased the pain somewhat.

Division 1 handicap first place went to young Ross Powell, winning him The Millicent Bowl, with scores of 70 and 65 = 135 net off his 9 handicap.

Golspie member Jamie Oliver tied with Sinclair on 138 but had the better second round net to take the second Div 1 voucher.

Division 2 Handicap was won by Golspie member James Urquhart (Doushtie) trailing his brother Ross who had scored a net 66 to lead by one one shot, but the second round took its toll on Ross around the 4th & 5th and he never recovered. James pressed home his advantage with a net 67 and 69 for 136 total but also lost out by one shot in The Millcent Bowl.

U.S.A. regular visitor Glen Owen took second place with 73 + 67 =140 closely followed by Golspie members Tim Featherstone and Ian Sergant both with 141 Featherstone having the better second round net 70 to Sargent’s 72.
