ALLY Macdonald hopes he can enjoy success with Brora Rangers as a manager as he did as a player.

He is set to take charge of the Cattachs for the first time in a Scottish Cup game as they are set to host Berwick Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

MacDonald has enjoyed Brora Rangers’ best ever moments in the competition.

The most memorable was the 2-1 second round win over Hearts, who were playing in the Championship, in March 2021.

Now MacDonald, who still is a player manager, is looking to create more memorable moments with Brora Rangers.

“I am excited about Saturday as the Scottish Cup is a competition which has been good to us,” said MacDonald.

“There have been memorable moments for us in the competition in the last few years.

“As a manager, it feels like being in the Scottish Cup does come with more emotion and responsibility.

“It is good to test ourselves against teams from outside the Highland League.”

Berwick Rangers were relegated from SPFL League Two in 2019 after losing to Cove Rangers in the play-off final.

They have not come close to promotion back to League Two and currently find themselves in eighth place in the Lowland League.

MacDonald says he will attempt to do his homework on Saturday’s opponents.

“We will get as much information as we can on them,” he said.

“They have players who have been about the league for a number of years and they will be well experienced and a decent outfit.”

MacDonald didn’t hide from the fact that winning the Highland League is their priority.

But he knows how much a good Scottish Cup run can be for the club.

“The Scottish Cup does come with financial benefits and that is as seen as a challenge for Highland League clubs. The further you can get, the better commercially it is for the club.”
