BRORA couple Shaun and Pat Ashe made a winning start to the Mixed Foursomes season when they won the Adamson Salver in the SSPCA mixed stableford competition at Brora last Saturday.

They amalgamated a winning 37 points from halves of 19 and 18, their inward half enhanced by a gross birdie three at the 14th hole, which contributed four points to their card, and another three points from their birdie two on the final green – this coming after failing to score at the new 11th hole.

With 35 points taking second place was another local married couple, Alister and Angela Sutherland, and in third place were Sandy and Pauline Brady from Muir of Ord on 34 points. On a better inward half count the Bradys pipped Brora’s American member Sally Ross, who was in the village for this week’s Golf Week, and her local playing partner Ken Lorimer, for third place.

Both had 34 points but the Bradys’ home count was 18 points against 14.

In comparison with conditions earlier in the week, by Saturday summer had arrived with all the visitors attending this week’s Golf Week hoping it would continue. The early arrival of Golf Week participants added to the entry from which the SSPCA’s local Sutherland Branch funds benifited by £200.
