A BONAR Bridge kickboxer has become the new Iska Scottish champion in the under-85kg beginners, light contact class - after taking up the sport only a year ago.

Luke Murray (27) also won gold in the adult team points competition at the Scottish Open Championships, held at Kelvin Hall Sports Centre, Glasgow.

And apprentice scaffolder Iain Campbell (20), also from Bonar, won the silver medal in the under-75kg beginners light contact category at the International Sport Kickboxing Association event.

Luke, a fish farmer, fought three fights to get into the final and now goes up to the intermediate category where the standard is higher. The two are members of the Highland Kickboxing Club and their performance has been praised by their instructor Chud Ridley.

Said Chud: "Luke had to dig very deep to overcome his opponent in the final. It was a close fight but he came out on top with a unanimous points decision.

"Iain fought two fights before he narrowly lost an exciting final over two rounds."

Anyone wishing to try competition fighting is invited to go along to Bonar Bridge Community Hall on Tuesday or Thursday evenings, juniors 6pm -7pm, adults and sparring classes 7pm - 9pm.
