Golspie Primary School pupil Leo Lannon was the overall winner of an art competition run by the Sutherland Lord Lieutenancy team to mark the king’s coronation.

His imaginative drawing featured a crown perched at a jaunty angle on top of a thistle with a hill, trees and castle rampart in the background.

The letter, written on the king’s behalf by deputy private secretary Dr John Sorabji, was sent to Lord Lieutenant Patrick Marriott who then presented it to Leon.

The letter reads: “I have shown your letter and the photograph to the king who was most grateful to you for taking the time to write as you did and for sending in the wonderful drawing by Leo Lannon.

“I have also been asked if you could convey His Majesty’s congratulations and warmest good wishes to Leo."

Major General Marriott said Leo had been thrilled to receive the letter.

An established patron of the arts, King Charles is himself a keen amateur artist, and is regarded as a talented watercolourist.
