THE first steps have been taken towards creating a sports and recreation area the Golspie community "can be proud of".

According to John Murray, treasurer of the Blaize Pitch, a lease has now been agreed with the Highland Council and plans are being drawn up for the first phase of redevelopment.

He added: "Our aim is to create an area that can be utilised by people from all over Sutherland and we hope to link in with as many clubs and groups as possible along with Golspie High School, as we aim to make sure that the facility is used to its maximum potential.

"Phase one consists of a 60m x 40m all-weather playing surface suitable for seven-a-side football and also hockey; and a 14m x 30.5m basketball/volleyball court, all of which will be floodlit.

"Parking will be provided, which will be of great use as an overspill for the schools and swimming pool when large events are being held.

"Changing facilities encompassing showers and lockers are included in phase one and applications are being put together for funding sources, along with a business plan for the project.

"The area for phase two will be looked at for best use once we have phase one built and it is being used."

Michael Bonner, chairman of the pitch committee, said: "We thought that we should update people on the progress to date, just in case people think that not much is happening.

"These things have to go through the process and, as frustrating as it can be at times, we are confident that the people of Sutherland will have a sports and recreation area to be proud of in the future."
