Scottish Water has announced that work on a £3.5 million project to upgrade more than 5km of water mains serving communities around Kinlochbervie is under way.

The project, to ensure customers continue to receive clear, fresh water and reduce the chances of bursts on the network, will be split into a number of phases over the course of the rest of the year and into spring 2023.

The first phase, which is expected to last for six weeks, began today in Balchrick and will focus on the access road to Droman Pier.

Customers in and around Kinlochbervie have experienced significant disruption to their service in recent years as a result of bursts occurring on the key water main that serves the area.

The rest of the project will continue on a rolling basis, with phases of activity focused on Oldshoremore, Kinlochbervie, Badcall, Inshegra and Achriesgill.

The work will be delivered by Scottish Water’s alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) and contractor AG Wilson.

Traffic management will be in place where required and an on-site team will liaise with those customers whose access routes may be affected.

The work may also involve some short, planned interruptions to water supplies in the area as new sections of water main are brought into service, however this will be kept to a minimum.

Residents and businesses will be notified at least 48 hours in advance of any planned interruption affecting their supply.

Scottish Water corporate affairs manager Gavin Steel said: “We recognise that some customers in and around Kinlochbervie have experienced significant disruption to their service as a result of bursts occurring on the key water main that serves the local area in recent years.

“We would like to apologise for this and thank customers for their patience while our local team has responded to restore supplies on these occasions - as well as while we have been preparing this significant investment to secure a more reliable service for the future.

“While we hope that the delivery of the work will not impact unduly on residents, we do appreciate that the need for some traffic management measures and the potential for planned interruptions to water supplies as work progresses will cause some short-term inconvenience."
