Two ranger-led winter solstice walks in Caithness and Sutherland have had to be cancelled due to a warning of strong winds across the north of Scotland on Thursday.

A festive guided walk from Crosskirk to Scrabster Harbour along the picturesque coastal edge of north Caithness, was one of the planned outings. This 11-kilometer trek promised a chance to connect with nature and celebrate the holiday season in a unique way.

In the west, a mid-winter challenge walk up Stac Pollaidh in the Inverpolly Nature Reserve, has also become victim to the weather forecast.

High Life Highland countryside rangers said they had reluctantly admitted defeat and cancelled the two solstice events.

They added: “The unpredictability of nature is a reality that outdoor enthusiasts often have to contend with, especially during the winter months. Even though the preceding days had been marked by crisp, clear weather, the approaching storm is a reminder that the wilderness conditions can and do change.

“The decision to cancel was made to ensure the well-being of all involved, underscoring the importance of safety in any outdoor activity planning.”
