Bright as a button and smart as new pins, four and five-year-olds across Sutherland are embarking on their long school journey.

Most will be used to attending playgroups or nurseries, but the move into primary school is a significant milestone in a child’s life.

Some in rural areas such as at Gledfield Primary School, are starting out as the only one in their class, but will no doubt have the support of older pupils.

But others, including in the county town of Dornoch, are in a sizeable intake, with a class of 17 for the 2020/21 academic year.

And the engaging smiles of the three new pupils (pictured left) at Scourie Primary School say it all.

The education system has undergone some turmoil since lockdown with the closure of schools and the cancellation of exams followed by the furore over results.

But the arrival of the new cohort of primary ones gives a reassuring sense of normality.

As always at this time of year, schools in Sutherland are very welcome to send in photos of their new P1 intakes and we will publish them in print, in the Northern Times, as well as online.

Each photo should be sent as a JPG attachment and should have a file size of at least 1MB, please. The email address is editor@northern-times.co.uk
